Zion, IL BACK STORY
There have been seven violent deaths associated with the grounds around the Dungeon of Doom area in Zion, IL. This historic location area once the home of the mysterious "Lakeside Candy Company which was closed down in the 60's. There have been seven deaths there since, causing the area to be a highly probable site for paranormal activity.

Built in 1916, the candy factory at 29th Street and Ebenezer Avenue faces Dungeon of Doom's Warwick Building and shares the parking lot. This is near Lake Michigan and was once at the center of Zion Industries, the economic engine of the religious community founded by John Alexander Dowie a century ago. But, because of the bizarre events, the seventh as recent as a hanging in 2003, the city finely demolished the building in 2004 which is when the unusual occurrences are said to have increased at the Warwick building which houses the Dungeon of Doom haunted house.

It has been suggested that the main disturbance could be caused by the misplaced spirit of Scott Bielech roaming the area. His friend, Geoffrey Leon murdered Bielech, September 1998 and then for no explained reason took the body to the Zion location and burned it along with himself. Now, EXACTLY 13 YEARS LATER, Ed Shanahan will reach out and try to try to contact the spirit who was once victim of this bizarre murder suicide.
Hopefully this evening will put to rest the negative energy surrounding the warehouse grounds and answer the main question for many; "Why dose this warehouse area attracting this type of dark event?" And coincidentally without them knowing, attracted the owners of Dungeon of Doom to create its award winning haunted warehouse attraction facing the property?

Shanahan is a column writer for eXaminer.com  Chicago Paranormal and Spiritual, and Chicago Now, a Chicago Internet Information site, and the voice behind Haunted American Tours a GPS iPhone Ap where Ed narrates a tour of the haunted down town Chicagoland area. Ed has been written about in four books, with two published in 2009. Has been in many newspapers, and a guest on radion and TV siws.

Clad in Darkness is first and foremost a metal band, however, the conventions that tie one down to a specific mould of doom, black, post, death, or any other type of metal are not of interest to our members. Nor is metal something we strictly adhere to; our listening habits are eclectic and an influence on us: from post-rock to jazz, electronic to the blues, ethnic music, classical of all periods, and anything in between. We are fans of the avant-garde, experimental, and intelligent music and we draw inspiration from several artistic mediums and emotions.

Mayhem part ways with guitarist, and find replacement

Norwegian black metallers MAYHEM have parted ways with French guitarist Silmaeth (ex-VORKREIST) and have replaced him with Teloch (NIDINGR, GOD SEED, OV HELL).

Commented MAYHEM vocalist Attila Csihar: "MAYHEM have decided to step forward and invite Teloch into the MAYHEM brotherhood, replacing Silmaeth on guitars.

"Teloch is a longtime friend and a great guitarist.

"MAYHEM would like to thank Silmaeth for his full dedication towards the band for the last two years, we wish him all success in his musical career!”

Teloch added: "After many years in the Norwegian metal scene, doing all sorts of extreme metal in numerous bands, I finally hit the bulls eye and joined my old friends in MAYHEM!"

MAYHEM's current live formation is as follows:

Attila Csihar: Vocals
Necrobutcher (a.k.a. Jørn Stubberud): Bass
Hellhammer (a.k.a. Jan Axel Blomberg): Drums
Morfeus (a.k.a. Krister Dreyer): Guitar
Teloch: Guitar

Rex Brown quits Arms of the Sun

Bassist Rex Brown (PANTERA, DOWN) has amicably left ARMS OF THE SUN — the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas-based band featuring Lance Harvill on vocals and guitar, and Ben Bunker (GRYN) on guitar and John Luke Hébert on drums. A replacement bassist has not yet been announced.

Brown previously stated about ARMS OF THE SUN, which he described as "THE BEATLES on acid," "It's something that is a real passion for me. Usually when I do a record, I just turn everything off and do something else, but I have been coming back to this music. It's heartfelt and really good. . . . This is a labor of love for me. It's some serious songwriting. . . I have that same spark that I had on [PANTERA's] 'Vulgar Display Of Power'. That's the way I feel about it now. It's not what's to be expected out of me. It's more song-orientated and really good music."

ARMS OF THE SUN recently finished recording more than a dozen tracks that were produced and mixed by Terry Date (DEFTONES, PANTERA, SOUNDGARDEN).

The following songs were laid down during the sessions:

* March Of The Dolls
* Slow
* Coming Up Roses
* Give Metime
* Wasted Me
* Falling To Pieces
* High
* Behind The Sun
* On Me
* Something About Today
* Empty
* Dead Inslde

ARMS OF THE SUN made its live debut on April 17, 2010 at Lakewood Theater in Dallas, Texas.

*

Slayer guitarist to sit out part of tour

Jeff Hanneman, guitarist and founding member of SLAYER, was hospitalized late last month where he underwent emergency surgery on his right arm after contracting a serious infection, according to his bandmates Kerry King, Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo.

While Hanneman's doctors were not able to definitively identify the infection's origin, they diagnosed necrotizing fasciitis, and indicated it likely was rooted in a spider bite. The guitarist is now recuperating at home, has already begun the process of subsequent medical procedures including skin grafts, and is expected to make a full recovery.

In light of this situation and SLAYER's upcoming participation in the Australian Soundwave Festival tour that is set to kick off on February 26, the band has made the tough decision to play the dates without Hanneman, and will bring on a guest guitarist to fill in for him until such time as he has fully recuperated and is ready to return to the lineup. The band will announce details about the guest guitarist shortly.

"Jeff is our brother, we've all been friends and together as a band for almost 30 years," said Araya, "so we just want him to completely recover as soon as possible."

"After everything that happened last year," King added, "we all agreed that we just can't let our fans down again," referring to Araya's severe back and neck pain that prompted his January 2010 surgery, unfortunately leading to the band's postponement or cancellation of numerous shows in 2009 and 2010. "Jeff is totally on board with this decision, so we will tour as planned. At this point, we can't pinpoint exactly what day he'll be back, but he'll be back as soon as he possibly can. And we can't wait for Jeff to get better and get his ass back on the road."

According to WebMD, necrotizing fasciitis is an infection caused by bacteria. It can destroy skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles. The disease sometimes is called "flesh-eating" bacteria. When it occurs on the genitals, it is called Fournier gangrene.

Stone Sour on Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday Night

STONE SOUR  will perform on the Wednesday, February 16 episode of ABC-TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" (which will actually air the morning of Thursday, February 17).

Metallica working on secret project

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett revealed to RollingStone.com in a brand new interview that the band will head back into the studio in May to begin a new project. "We want to record it in two weeks," Hammett said. "We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not really 100 percent a METALLICA record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it's more a recording project than a bona fide METALLICA album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen."

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich hinted in an interview that the band plans to enter the studio this spring and begin working on material for its 10th album. Ulrich first told The Pulse Of Radio that the group was thinking of getting back to work in "March or April" and made similar comments to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, telling the paper, "In the past, we would be fed up with METALLICA whenever we returned home after a gigantic world tour, but this time it's different."

Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio that the band is having such a good time lately that it doesn't want to take several years off between records like before. "Sometimes after these marathon tours that we go on, we end up really needing some time away. But right now there's such a good vibe in the band — everybody's just really having a good time, appreciating each other, appreciating METALLICA, that I don't think it's gonna be a year," he said. "My best guess would be we'll probably get back to it in the springtime, start piecing some riffs together, play some songs, have some fun, kind of approach it without sort of real deadlines or any of that type of stuff."

METALLICA's turmoil during the early 2000s was well-documented in the film "Some Kind Of Monster", but Ulrich told the Danish paper that the band members' relationship has changed over the years. He explained, "It helps our relationships that we've all got families and children and they all get along with each other. We really like each other at the moment. There were a few years when things were really bad . . . the fact that we have something to talk about other than tonight's setlist is or if someone made a mistake during yesterday's show makes a big difference."

Although the band has cut back on its touring schedule, it still played more than 200 shows in 45 countries in support of 2008's "Death Magnetic" album. Ulrich said, "Of course it's still hard to play that many shows, but the older you get, the less you take success for granted . . . It's awesome that a bunch if semi-old farts like us can still travel around the world and thousands of people wanna share that experience with us."

Scott Kelly and Wino at Abbey Pub Tomorrow Night

SCOTT KELLY & SCOTT "WINO" WEINRICH Most metal partakes of what you might call, in Black Sabbath's phrase, "technical ecstasy"—fans are almost as likely to fetishize a band's arsenal of effects pedals and amps as they are the skill of the musicians. So naturally it's a daunting challenge for a heavy guitarist to play relatively naked and at least mostly unplugged. SCOTT "WINO" WEINRICH, best known from his time in the Obsessed and Saint Vitus and more recently a member of doom-metal supergroup Shrinebuilder, recently released his second solo album, Adrift (Exile on Mainstream), a moody, atmospheric, mostly acoustic affair. It digs down to metal's oft-forgotten roots, buried deep in the blues, and taps a wellspring of terror and daydreaming and subtle wit—I especially appreciate what he does to Motorhead's "Iron Horse." SCOTT KELLY of Neurosis, one of Weinrich's bandmates in Shrinebuilder, is likewise no stranger to the acoustic realm—his side project Blood and Time translates the cerebral grace and simmering vulcanism of Neurosis into the freak-folk medium with no loss of meaning or power. When it comes right down to it, it's not the size of the Marshall stack, it's whose fingers are on the fretboard, and Kelly and Weinrich are two of the best. They've recorded a split seven-inch for Volcom, and if all goes according to plan, copies will be available at tonight's show. Earthen Grave (playing an acoustic set) and Dolan Wayward (an alter-ego of Sweet Cobra's Tim Remis, aka Botchy Vasquez) open.  8:30 PM, Abbey Pub, 3420 W. Grace, 773-463-5808 or 877-435-9849, $15.

Macabre's Human Stew Contest

Today the public has a chance to sink their teeth into some vintage MACABRE nostalgia in the form of Jeff Boyardee's Old Fashioned Human Stew! This mysterious but wholesome canned delight was concocted by the band themselves in the Dahmer album era. As it reads on the label: "Finally a human stew prepared the way Jeff prepared it himself.  We start by individually hand-separating fresh humans. We smother the meat with a delightful assortment of seasoned spices and slow simmer with a variety of garden vegetables. The result is a wholesome and hearty meal that is delicious and satisfying. Jeff Boyardee Old Fashioned Human Stew is Macabre-licious."

Master to tour US

Death metal legends MASTER are proud to announce their 2011 U.S. headlining tour. Scheduled to take place next month, the debauchery will commence on March 1 in Fredrick, Maryland and run through over a month's worth of dates before coming to a close on April 3 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The band will be joined by Los Angeles black metal collective Lightning Swords Of Death and Ohio thrashers Mobile Deathcamp.

Said MASTER mainman Paul Speckmann of the trek: "Looking forward to bringing MASTER Metal back to the USA and sharing a few new tracks from The Human Machine as well as playing the classics once again for you! MASTER guitarist Alex Nejezchleba and Peter Bajci from the Czech Republic will be joining me on the American trek. MASTER your own Destiny."

MASTER released their tenth studio album, The Human Machine, last May via Singapore's Pulverised Records. Said Blabbermouth in a review of the record: "MASTER albums have always boasted riffing defined by density, nastiness, and slight contortions that make them memorable." Terrorizer added: "Dragging its venomous oldschool intent like a caveman with his club, MASTER are proudly living up to their name and taking their place among death metal's founding fathers. Commended Metal Maniacs: "The Human Machine is a monster here to restore the idea that the world’s most grotesque and horrifying subject matter has a place to unfurl itself and those of us who indulge can do so without worrying if a hair’s out of place."

Rob Zombie to induct Alice Cooper into Hall of Fame

Rocker-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie will induct Alice Cooper into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on March 14 at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The ceremony will be aired live on the Fuse channel.

Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper took part in the Halloween Hootenanny tour last fall. The trek followed a short run the pair did together last summer. Zombie shared with The Pulse of Radio some inside info on what Alice likes to get up to while out on tour. "Here's the thing: he loves to shop, so he's always shopping," Rob told The Pulse of Radio. "So every day he would show up at the gig with a new gift for me. First day he came back with a, it's a little pig that when you turn it on it rolls around on the floor laughing hysterically like it can't breathe. And then the next day he brought me a VANILLA ICE tour shirt. Which I don't think he thought I would wear, so of course I wore it the next day to the meet-and-greet we did together just to prove a point."

Alice Cooper admitted that he was always confident that the Hall Of Fame honor would come his way, telling Billboard, "I've always felt the same way about this whole thing. I kind of sat back and said, 'It will happen eventually.' It did get to be kind of a joke, not being nominated. I got to the point where I was saying, 'OK, I'm the Pete Rose of rock n' roll!' So now that it's a reality, it's a different take on it. Now I sit there and go, 'Wow. Wow! We've got to really get up and play, and assume the position of being in the Hall of Fame.' It'll be great."

Cooper told Rolling Stone that he'll be performing with the original ALICE COOPER band at the Rock Hall induction, saying, "We're trying to figure out if we do 'School's Out', do we send balloons of confetti into the audience? I doubt there'll be a snake there though. . . If you look at the list of past inductees it's all of my heroes, from Pete Townshend to THE YARDBIRDS to THE BEATLES to the STONES. It's everybody that we listened to in order to become Alice Cooper, so it's pretty amazing that those are the same people that actually voted for us."

Alice Cooper told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that at the end of the day whether he was in the Rock Hall or not didn't seem to bug him much. "I've kinda put it in my head that if it happens, it happens, if it doesn't — the longer it goes, the more obvious it is that I'm not in it, and 99 percent of the people in the world think I'm in it anyways — even people on the board that vote on it," he said. "Toby (Mamis, Cooper's manager) talked to one of the guys and he says, 'Y'know, what is this thing with Alice? Is there a blackball or something on Alice?' And the guy said, 'What are you talking about? Alice is in the Hall Of Fame.' And he (Mamis) said, 'No, he isn't.' He (the Hall Of Fame rep) said, 'He's not?!' I think people assume that I am."

Born of Osiris and others on "The Orphan Killer" soundtrack

"True Pain Is Screamless." These are the words of notorious serial killer Marcus Miller The Orphan Killer. His murderous rampage is being discovered by thousands of Facebook fans daily. Most people can't figure out if it is a movie or a REAL killer. The movie is pure "jaw-dropping madness" and truly "gore-riffic." The soundtrack is one that every metal and hardcore music lover will salivate over.

"The Orphan Killer" is a tour de force murder flick that defies classification. It goes far beyond current trends in gore and breaks open a new suffering genre of horror. Marcus Miller is a serial murderer hellbent on teaching his estranged sister Audrey what it means to have family loyalty. His lessons are taught in massive doses of vulgar and unimaginable pain. Throughout her brutal torture we learn that Marcus is not the only Miller with Killer in the bloodline as Audrey proves to be a formidable adversary.

Director extraordinaire Matt Farnsworth elaborates: "'The Orphan Killer' is the new horror icon and its soundtrack is made of future metal Gods. Never before has a film and soundtrack been combined to create an instant icon in the horror genre."

The soundtrack kicks off with the pivotal song from San Francisco's FIRST BLOOD, also titled "First Blood", with the classic opening line, "They drew first blood, not fucking me!". Rounding out the soundtrack are unreleased new songs from ASKING ALEXANDRIA and BORN OF OSIRIS, as well as new tracks from some of the best new bands in metal and hard rock.

"The Orphan Killer: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" will be sold exclusively on Facebook, through the Milyoni-powered "The Orphan Killer" store, with the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the film to be released on Valentine's Day, February 14.

"The Orphan Killer: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" track listing:

01. FIRST BLOOD - "First Blood" (Bullet Tooth)
02. AFFIANCE - "Nostra Culpa" (Bullet Tooth)
03. ASKING ALEXANDRIA - "Someone, Somewhere" (Sumerian)

Withering Soul sign with Mortal Music

Chicago's extreme metal artists WITHERING SOUL have inked a deal with Mortal Music. The band's new album, "No Closure", will be released on March 8 via MVD Entertainment Group distribution. The CD was recorded and mixed by Chris Wisco (NOVEMBERS DOOM, MICHAEL ANGELO BATIO, LAZURUS A.D.) at Belle City Sound in Racine, Wisconsin and mastered at The Cutting Room in Sweden.

According to a press release, WITHERING SOUL's music can be described as "a combination of symphonic black metal and melodic death metal... with some gothic overtones thrown in as well. Featuring carefully crafted songs full of interesting changes and climactic phrasings, the band delivers a mature sound that is not normally achieved on a first release. Also, as an underlying blue print, the band draws on influences from some of the finest in Scandinavian black metal before venturing off and establishing their own style. Throughout the album, you will find sinister yet majestic clean vocal melodies, catchy rhythms, and a haunting vibe that would make for an amazing soundtrack to a classic horror novel. As a special treat, guest backing vocals have been provided by Melissa Ferlaak (ECHOTERRA, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS, AESMA DAEVA) on the songs 'Lifeless They Lie' and 'Unquiet'."

"No Closure" track listing:

01. Night of the Revenant
02. Phantasmal Chaos Divinity
03. The Sequitor
04. Tides of the Accursed
05. Possession of Deception - Part II
06. Sadistic Redress
07. Manifest Transparency
08. Lifeless they Lie
09. Unquiet
10. Requiem of Sorrow

The "Tides Of The Accursed" song is available for streaming on the WITHERING SOUL MySpace page.

Expect great things in 2011," says front man Mark Hunter.

Over the past ten years, the band has sold close to 500,000 albums. The band is currently in the studio working on their next full length, which will be released later this year.

The band originally formed in 1998 by Overkill co-founder and bassist DD Verni. Having played in one of the most respected thrash bands ever for over 2 decades, why have another band? Two reason states DD, “the challenge of writing interesting new material and for fun of course!” The bands second release caught the ear of playwright Andrea Lepcio. Soon after, Verni and Lepcio were collaborating with 3-time Tony Winner Hinton Battle to direct and choreograph. Soon the seeds of The "Bronx Casket Co, A New Musical" were planted.

Verni quickly recruited several members from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to perform. The cast consisted of performers from the Broadway shows Hairspray, Rent and Dance of the Vampire. There have been several performances off-Broadway for producers/backers and the show is still in the writing stages. It has a gothic/Broadway score with a twisted love story woven throughout. Songs from the first two Bronx Casket Co. releases are included in the show, as well as 13 new songs D.D. Verni penned just for the musical.

It’s been five years since BRONX CASKET CO. last released an album and has been well worth the wait.

THE ACCUSED Announce New Drummer

Like a bunch of zombies drunk on embalming fluid, veteran hardcore thrashers THE ACCUSED prepare to take their Splatter-Rock-Speakeasy and After-Hours-Sicko-Sideshow into turbo-nuclear-tombstone-kicking overdrive with the announcement of a new stick-breaker in Warren A. Pease (pronounced "war 'n' peace") Said the band in a collective statement: "He's a relatively young chap at the tender age of 25. Then again, with THE ACCUSED founding guitarist, Tommy Niemeyer rounding the corner heading into half-century territory, who isn't young to that old fucker? Warren, or 'Andy' as he's affectionately referred to most noticeably at first brings his youthful enthusiasm and perpetual grin to THE ACCUSED. But don't let the friendly face fool you into thinking this is some run-of-the-mill, trigger-tapping tom-tom-tickler. No! The young Mr. Pease possesses an absolutely mind-boggling, pile-driving, double-kick drumming style that will make you wonder if he's got extra appendages hidden away back there somewhere. Having the freshly-plucked Warren A. Pease now on drums will up the ante for all who are dealt-in when THE ACCUSED bring their horror-filled freak show to the stage sometime early 2011. The Kings of Splatter Rock are back with a vicious and brutal hardcore attack."

In related news, THE ACCUSED will unleash a new video for "Hemline," the seventh track off The Curse Of Martha Splatterhead, released via Southern Lord Recordings last year. The video is a mini-Splatter epic starring the lovely and terrifying Martha Splatterhead, was shot in three locations from Marysville, Washington to Los Angeles, California and directed by Federico Aragon. A worldwide premiere of "Hemline" will be announced for later this month. Be sure to check the band's website for further instructions!

Helmet, Crowbar, and Saint Vitus to team up for a tour

(New York, NY) - The 2011 Metalliance Tour has officially been announced. The tour sponsored by Revolver Magazine, Loudtrax.com, Brooklyn Vegan, Mosh Potatoes Cookbook and Giddy Up! Sauces is proud to announce HELMET, SAINT VITUS and CROWBAR for its inaugural line up. The festival tour will run through the U.S. from March 17th through April 5th.

Legendary alternative metal band HELMET will perform their 1992 platinum-selling release of Meantime in its entirety. The Interscope Records release gave the band mainstream attention with songs like "Unsung" and "In The Meantime".  With the band's renewed success after getting back together in 2004, this tour will be one of the most anticipated of 2011.

One of the most highly influential Doom Metal bands in America, SAINT VITUS are regarded as one of the first bands of the genre starting out as early as the 1970's. The band featuring Scott "Wino" Weinrich, bassist Mark Adams, guitarist Dave Chandler and drummer Armando Acosta have influenced so many bands in Doom and Metal . "Saint Vitus is more than ready to infect The Metalliance Tour! We've been wanting to do something like this for some time now...so prepare for destruction!!" says lead guitarist Dave Chandler.The band has done a handful of shows and some European Festivals but this will be their first full US tour in over a decade.

CROWBAR front man Kirk Windstein concludes, "Wow! This tour is gonna rule! I've loved Helmet since the beginning and loved St. Vitus even longer. With the new Crowbar record having hit the streets by then, look out! This bill will bring just what we need to crush each city with an avalanche of stylistic thunder!"

Dew-Scented Premiere New Video and Announce Touring Guitarist

German thrashers DEW-SCENTED have premiered the video for the track, "Arise From Decay," from 2010's acclaimed "Invocation," out on Prosthetic in North America, Spiritual Beast in Japan and Metal Blade in Europe. Check out the video now, exclusively at Metal Injection: http://www.metalinjection.net/tv/view/6251/dew-scented-arise-from-decay-video-premiere

Vocalist Leif Jensen commented, "While we spent a good amount of time on the European roads in 2010 promoting the release of the newest DEW-SCENTED album 'Invocation,' we figured it would be a good idea to collect live footage and have some of it presented to our global supporters. We chose the album's opening 'Arise From Decay' for the clip as this track has become an important and very energetic piece of our current live-set. We are about to embark on a 4-week European tour with Nile and Melechesh later this month, so we hope to see some of you out there...Let's make it a heavy new year 2011!"

In other D-S news, the band, who announed the departure of guitarist Martin Walczak last week, have named Michael Hankel (ex-Erosion, Holy Moses) as the touring rhythm guitarist for their upcoming European tour supporting Nile. "We have known 'Michi' for several years now, and are certain he will complement the band in a great way for the upcoming shows."

Whitechapel get new drummer

Knoxville, Tennessee's WHITECHAPEL recently parted ways with drummer Kevin Lane and replaced him with Ben Harclerode of the Glendale, Arizona band KNIGHTS OF THE ABYSS. Lane is said to have returned home to Kingsport, Tennessee and is planning to go back to school.

Kevin has released the following statement in response to Internet speculation regarding his departure from the group: "Over the past years I've had the experience of a lifetime and gotten to travel the world with not only a great band of musicians but some of my best friends. Unfortunately, that time has come to an end. My playing had a falling out over the past year, thus I've decided to come home for good and go back to school full-time.

"The past few tours I had the privilege of my good friend Gavin Parsons to fill my shoes, and now another phenomenal drummer who I believe will do leaps and bounds of improvement to the band as a whole, Ben Harclerode, has moved into the position until the decision for a full-time drummer has been made."

WHITECHAPEL founding member and guitarist Alex Wade adds: "It's sad to see Kevin go; he was not just a fellow bandmember, but like a brother to all of us.

"I think it is honorable of him to step down to better the band. He is still, and always will be, an amazing drummer and talented musician; I believe it is just time for a new chapter for WHITECHAPEL.

"That being said, we would like to welcome Ben Harclerode to the band to fill the drumming position. In my opinion, he is one of the most solid and talented drummers in modern metal and we couldn't be more excited for him to be playing with us. Ben will be helping us out until we take further measures to decide on a permanent drummer, but that is just something that is not needed right now, nor are we taking submissions."

Y&T bassist loses battle with lung cancer

Guitarist/vocalist Dave Meniketti of long-running California rockers Y&T has released the following statement:

"It is with profound sadness and disbelief that I tell you that my best buddy for 37 years, [Y&T bassist Phil Kennemore], passed away this morning, January 7, 2011 at 1 a.m. at Stanford Hospital. Bravely and steadfastly battling the horrible spectacle of lung cancer, at the end he was surrounded by his family members, and the Y&T family up until his final breath.

"All the beautiful things that I could say about my buddy Phil could never be summed up in a short sentence or two, and I promise that I will be back to say so much more about how I feel about him and his talents in due time. But for now, at 3 a.m., after just having returned home from his passing, let me at least put this out there.

"Phil Kennemore was not only a sweet and passionate man with his life, friends and family, but as an artist, he also had that rare ability to say what was on his mind with the most eloquent, clever, and to-the-point lyrics, yet could turn it on its head in a second with some other viewpoint on reality and nail the point dead center. He was able to do what very few can — say the things that others have been thinking, but could never quite seem to put into words. He has always had a keen knack for doing that.

"As a musician, with those huge fingers, his bass playing was always loud, strong, and deep, filling the largest or smallest of stages equally.

"He had an amazingly strong life force that has influenced everyone who ever had the opportunity to be called a friend of his. I am forever grateful for our lifelong friendship, that was always in place throughout the worst and best of times. I will miss his sense of humor, his amazing wit, but most of all I will always miss not seeing him to my left on the stages I will play from this moment forward.

"Yes, he was one of the class guys on this planet, and in this business, and I will always do what I can to spread the legacy of Phil Kennemore across the globe on every stage that I land on.

"You know how much I love you, Phil, and you knew how much your fans and fellow musicians loved and respected you. There was nothing left unsaid. You had a rich and wonderful life and I can only tell you that I was happy to have been alongside you every step of the glorious way.

"Cheers to you, Phil.

"Your friend forever, Dave."

Phil Kennemore was 57 years old.

Y&T organized a special New Year's Eve benefit concert for Kennemore at the Avalon in Santa, Clara, California. The event featured guest appearances by members of such acts as QUEENSRŸCHE, TESTAMENT, DOKKEN, KEEL and HEAVEN & HELL.

Devildriver Bassist to sit out tour

Bassist Jonathan Miller of Santa Barbara, California metallers DEVILDRIVER has released the following statement:

"To all DEVILDRIVER fans and friends, I wanted to give you an update on my status as far as my health is concerned.

"Regarding the past two European tours, I was either forced to leave by my own accord or asked to leave by my band/managment.

"I have been touring with DEVILDRIVER for almost the past ten years and the drugs and alcohol have finally caught up with me. I realized this when I ended up in the ICU on my birthday last week.

"I need to make a change so that I can save my own life and keep the friends that I still have left.

"I know that a lot of DEVILDRIVER fans seek me out first as the one to party with because I consider myself a very social person who is quite outgoing, personable and friendly. That was all fun in my 20s touring with the band, but as I am entering my early 30s, I can feel the damage catching up with me mentally and physically. I don't want to burn out prematurely before my time on this Earth is up.

"On January 1st I will be entering an intense rehabilitation program in order for me to reclaim my health and the person who I once was.

"I will not be doing the Canadian tour in January or the Australian tour in February and March. This is for my own good. I need to come out of rehab with a sound body and mind. After I complete my rehabilitation I hope to see all DEVILDRIVER friends and family as soon as I can."

Mike Portnoy out of Avenged Sevenfold

Former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy has released the following statement:

"Yes, the rumors are true... Sadly my time with AVENGED SEVENFOLD has come to an end... The band has decided to carry on into 2011 without me...

"I had a great time with them throughout 2010, but it was their choice to end the relationship at the end of 2010 as was always the initial plan....

"I had an awesome time on stage with the guys every night and have so many cool memories from the experience with them... I am proud to always be part of the AVENGED SEVENFOLD family and history. I also adore the AVENGED SEVENFOLD fans and totally appreciate the way they welcomed me aboard and were so loving and supportive during my time with the band...thank you!

"As far as my future, I am excited by the endless musical possibilities that lie ahead of me...my love for music runs very deep and my taste is very broad and ecclectic which will give me the chance to explore many different things and collaborate with many great friends and artists I admire and respect...

"Happy holidaze to you all and c-ya in the New Year."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD frontman M. Shadows told The Pulse Of Radio that the band was not happy about the public way in which drummer Mike Portnoy's split with his former group DREAM THEATER was played out, which may have soured Portnoy's relationship with AVENGED, ultimately causing his departure from the Orange County, California-based act. "We were actually a little more shocked," M. Shadows said. "We felt that maybe both parties could have handled it a little more internally without being so press release-happy about what had happened between them. Because we're a band that, really, when it comes to news all over web sites or this or that about bands, you know, we don't tweet much, we don't try to put ourselves out that much, and all the drama and controversy wasn't something that we wanted at all."

Gwar frontman releases novel

For many years, Richmond, Virginia artist/musician Dave Brockie has been known to the world as GWAR's pig-snouted and bellicose lead "throat-thing" Oderus Urungus, playing to semi-packed houses around easily 35 percent of the world. Never one to shy away from using GWAR's success as a way to gain attention for a bewildering variety of side projects, including a glut of bands (X-COPS, DEATH PIGGY, DBX), a variety of bizarre performances (F-Art Players, Chippy the Chippopautamus, Crack-a-thon), and a slew of demented drawings and illustrations, Brockie has now added literature to his already bulging quiver of artistic arrows. Eleven years after its completion, Brockie's sprawling epic of modern war and ancient necromancy, "Whargoul", has finally been released in book form by Eraserhead Press.

The story of the "Whargoul" came to being in the late Nineties as Brockie toured Europe with GWAR. Inspired by some of histories more despicable events, Brockie began drawing and writing about the creature that called itself "Whargoul". The idea of an undying creature that found sustenance in the carnage of war began to flesh itself out in the form of several comics for the now-defunct Slave Pit Funnies, and was stand-out track on GWAR's 1997 album "Rag-Na-Rok". Ultimately Brockie decided the only way the story could truly be told was through a novel, and began hand-writing the book into a journal that was half-filled with pages of microscopic lettering, which he unbelievably lost, forcing him to re-write it from memory on his first lap-top. Brockie finally finished the book in 1999.

"After it was done, I didn't really know what to do with it, so I asked Henry Rollins," said Brockie. "He just kind of stared at me..."

The book ended up on Brockie's long-running web site where people could (and still can) download it free of charge. After languishing here for the better part of a decade it attracted the attention of Eraserhead Press publisher Jeff Burk, who after reading it decided it was good fit for the Eraserhaed/Deadite Publishing roster.

"Brockie finds insight, and ever humor, in our most destructive impulses," Burk said from the Eraserhead Press headquarters in Portland. "It's just what we need. This is not a book for everybody but those who get it will love it. In a world of boring and safe fiction, Whargoul is exactly the kind of book that metalheads, punks, and splatter fans are craving."

"Whargoul", the first novel from an artist who for over a quarter century has provided a consistent level of mayhem that few could match, or even want to, is now available from Amazon.com.

Lupara guitarist gets book deal

Former BROKEN HOPE/current LUPARA guitarist and author Jeremy Wagner has signed a book deal for his debut novel, "The Armageddon Chord". The book is slated for release in August 2011 in digital format, trade paperback, and a special, limited-edition hardcover through kRP Publishing.

Book synopsis: An ancient and evil song written in hieroglyphics is discovered; once transcribed and performed, the song will bring the Apocalypse upon the Earth and a gifted guitarist finds himself caught between the forces of good and evil."

Jeremy became an official, affiliate member of the Horror Writers Association (HWA) this past year.

Outside of writing and music, Jeremy will be launching an artist management company in 2011 with his close friend and manager, Frank Mastalerz of FM Entertainment. The as-yet-unnamed company will encapsulate artist development, booking, record company operations, and more.
